Loving husband will no doubt agree, that this is the moment the two tortoises he “wouldn’t even realise were there” and “nor would he be required to do anything for,” became quite the opposite. Mummy’s idea was for loving husband to help her to construct a custom made, 3 times larger house that would now take up an entire corner of the terrace.
According to her, their new pets appeared “sad”, possibly verging on depressed due to the lack of space and boring landscape. He was sceptical of course, wondering how she was able to see the depression and lack of lust for life she was alluding to. However, he agreed and mummy believes he secretly enjoyed building house number two.
It’s fair to say that mummy does not like researching things and is more of an impulse buyer, nor does she tend to read reviews or undertake comparison exercises. On this occasion though, due to the importance of her new pet’s dwellings, she spent rather a long time trawling through sites and looking a Pinterest and sending loving husband photos of potential new homes. He, kindly and repeatedly reminded her that they couldn’t dedicate the entire terrace to two small reptiles.
Mummy and now thankfully more enthusiastic daughter (always keen on a DIY project), did the treatment and painting of the wood (special pet safe wood paint was used) and loving husband built the structure including a corner box. Following a trip to a pet shop for special reptile bark, a wooden bridge, reptile vitamins and bath bowel and the garden shop for breathable plastic sheeting, soil, ready to roll turf and some weeds – yes, mummy was also surprised that you can buy weed plants and how much they cost – it was time to start putting the house together.
The end result was actually pretty impressive and though they never actually said it out loud, mummy was sure her tortoises were no longer “depressed” and indeed looked rather happy investigating their new home.
Note - In the very hot summer months, mummy had to attach sun meshing to the sides of the house and the terrace railings, in order to ensure there were shady areas and Txomin and Arthur didn’t fry in the midday sun.
