Following the house move, mummy and the family were due to take a trip – where it would be difficult to accommodate Txomin and Arthur. Therefore, mummy contacted her ex-neighbour who had always been rather fond of the tortoises and gave them roses when they were out in bloom – not to put in a vase and admire, but to feed to the boys. He would also bring round bunches of weeds which they devoured.
Let’s just say, mummy should have weighed them before she took them round as they were definitely much heavier when they got back a week later! Mummy had provided a list of what to feed them and what not to feed them, but kind neighbour was insistent on feeding them lettuce, and carrots – which meant they had icky cacas when they came back, with bits of carrot in and decidedly more liquidy and smellier than usual. He also mentioned apples, potatoes and celery is his whatsapp’s though mummy’s not sure whether they actually ate those or he was just suggesting they try them... In one of the photo’s he sent, there were some white cubes but she’s not sure exactly what it was.
Kind neighbour had also cordoned off a small part of the terrace with a ladder and made a make-shift house underneath a stone planter for them to sleep. It seems a ladder was not enough to keep Arthur in, who managed to climb over it and explore the rest of the terrace – scaring kind neighbours wife who is actually quite scared of tortoises.
All in all, they had a good trip and it could probably even be said, were spoilt more than they are at home - the boys definitely didn’t seem in a rush to go home. Mummy didn’t enjoy the icky cacas they did though after all that rich food, but it was a small price to pay for knowing your tortoises are in good hands whilst you’re away.
